In the two weeks since the attempted coup, the Erdogan Government has taken away teaching licences from 21,000 teachers, 15,000 education bureaucrats and 1500 university deans. More than 1000 private schools have been closed.
This is thought to be a reaction to the Gulen movement which is associated with schools, with asking questions and criticising government. Yet, it's very difficult to say where Gulen supporters are - there is not a formal membership process and this blanket targetting can only be seen as a worry for democracy there, let alone a worry for each of those individuals.
