Which type of transport is the most energy efficient?

An article on water usage in public transport prompted great discussion in our office. In terms of water usage, a car full of people is more water efficient. Interesting. We then hunted for a table of transport efficiency (see above) and those of us who cycle are now feeling especially smug.
