Yet another brilliant 4 Corners program last night reminded us of the extent of the corruption in Queensland, how Chris Masters' 4 Corners Moonlight State report in May 1987, resulted in the Fitzgerald Enquiry, which further revealed the extent of corruption and led to the resignation of the Premier, Joh Bjelke-Petersen and sent top police and crime bosses to jail.
Now, 30 years later, Tony Fitzgerald (pictured above) is working with the Australian Institute to survey politicians about their ethics as part of a plan to develop a federal anti corruption body. Twenty-two prominent barristers, academics and former politicians support the plan.
Mr Fitzgerald says Australian society is gradually becoming less egalitarian and more cynical as the gap between the haves and have-nots widens – and he blames the economic policies and attitudes of today's politicians.
